Have you recently experienced a job loss because of the economic downturn? Are you discouraged that you have been searching for employment for months without success? The Employment Skills Workshop, hosted by Troy University in Montgomery and The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Montgomery Chapter, is designed to assist participants in the job search.

The U.S. economy has experienced unemployment rates that are higher than they have been in a couple of decades. Alabama’s unemployment rate was recently reported to be 10.5%, down from 10.9%. Within the last year or so, employers have been forced to institute layoffs and hiring freezes that have left many in our community unemployed. As the economy begins to strengthen, employers will lift the hiring freezes and start the hiring process again. Because the applicant pool is plentiful, competition is stiff. Are you ready to compete with the massive number of applicants who will be applying for similar positions? If you need coaching and encouragement, this workshop will help you gain a competitive advantage over other applicants.

The workshop will focus on a variety of areas designed to improve your job search technique, including resume writing, interviewing etiquette, using technology and social networking in the job search, and polishing your presentation skills. The workshop speakers are seasoned Human Resource professionals from various industries, many of whom have extensive experience in selecting candidates for positions in their respective organizations.

The workshop will also offer topics to address the discouragement and loss of identity that often accompany job displacement. Topics will include innovative thinking, confidence building, financial juggling, and stress management. The classes are designed to encourage the sharing of ideas and techniques for surviving employment and job search challenges in this difficult economy. Many of the speakers have experienced displacement in a suffering economy at some point in their careers and will be able to offer first-hand stories and tips for survival.

The Employment Skills Workshop will be May 4, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at the Troy University Montgomery campus. The workshop fee is just $10.00 and includes lunch. Hurry, seating is limited to the first 140 confirmed registrants.
